You can never have too much vinyl. But you can have so much, that you don't realise what you have got, so lets kick off with some overlooked 'B' sides.
Barbara Acklin - Come and see me     Brunswick  55379   £15

B side to Lovemakes a woman, that's starting to pick up some interest after all these years. Written and produced by Eugene Record with help in the studio from Carl Davis, Gerald Sims and William Sanders. A smooth, mid-pacer with full orchestra backing, as Barbara's crisp vocals plead with her man to come and see her, so she can prove her love. This one will definitely grow on you,  if you don't already have this, get in quick, if you do have a copy,  search it out and give it a spin.

Jimmy James - Miss you so much   Pye 17165   £5

Unbelievably, this is the B side to Now is the time, Jimmy's big chart and disco hit from 1976. Jimmy turns in a performance thats been causing a stir in the clubs of Europe already and has recently been picked upon now, here in the UK. One dealer in the UK even has this listed as a cover- up. One that will appeal more to the 70's- modern element but should still find plays in the main rooms. Mid-pacer, with a Latin styled funky guitar and bongo's backing, whilst a brass section cuts in to break up Jimmy's vocal.

The Tams - Take away    ABC 10573   £15

A million miles away from the big chart scoring A side Hey girl. This is amid-paced r&b growler, that fits in to-day perfectly. A thumping piano intro, as a rumbling drum joins in just before that rasping vocal lead, with the rest of the group harmonising in the background. The piano and drums take turns then to cut in and back-up the vocals, with a short organ solo mid song. What price, if this had been say The 5 Royales etc.

The gates to soul heaven have opened and closed that much this year that they'll have to fit new hinges, next up his man that unfortunately passed through them.

Percy Sledge - Heart of a child    Atlantic 2358   £15

WOW !! Where's this been hiding ? Currently a big favourite of mine, that'll soon have you singing that chorus. If you haven't sent Santa your list yet,  then get this on it quick. A burping sax and thumping drum lead into Percy's vocal, as he tells of havingthe feelings and desires of a child in the body of a man. Percy is then joined by an almost child like, female backing, as this track continues to pound away in a full on upbeat tempo.

Eddie Floyd - Laurie    Stax 153 Uk   £25

Another song that is far removed from the artists norm. Strumming bass intro, before again guitar and drums cuts in, quickly joined by that Memphis sounding brass section. Upbeat crossover, as Eddie's lead and backing singers question the whereabouts of Laurie, as Eddie pleads his affections. A couple of spins and you'll be hooked on that chorus, " Laurie  eh, eh, eh. Where you gonna be tonight  ?.....will you be with me tonight ? eh, eh, eh.

Jackie Wilson - What'cha gonna do about me    Brunswick 55490   £20

Chugging piano intro steams in with a upbeat pace before Jackie's unmistakable voice kicks in, interspersed with a flute, brass section and strings, joined by female chorus before a piano break. Early 70's cross-over, written by Jeff Perry with the " Chicago production team " of Davis,  Sanders and Henderson. Just goes to show there is still life yet in Jackie's vast output.

jay and The Techniques - Don't ask me to forget    Polydor 2066648 Uk   £20

Great mid 70's double sider, with this the pick of the two. Full on smooth pruduction from Joe Renzetti and Jerry Ross, with just about everything bar the kitchen sink thrown in. Swirling strings bongo's and chug along guitar, as the Techniques sweet harmonising vocals compliment rather than compete against the male lead vocal. This saw it's U.S. release on the Event label.
